Essentially, everything from Matthew 23:36 to Matthew 24:33 was fulfilled by 70 AD when the Romans desolated Jerusalem, the temple, and the Jewish nation. However, many of the terms, such as the sun, moon, and stars being darkened, and the Messiah coming in power and glory, seem to imply the End of the World when read in English. Accurate History & Its Crucial Role in the MOTB

Why is this so confusing? Because there are two different end-time eschatologies (Doctrines) being discussed, Jesuit Futurism versus protestant Historicism. Each has a completely different view. So, let's refresh our memory of what Historicism is...

From Wikipedia: "Historicism is a method of interpretation in Christian eschatology which associates Biblical prophecies with actual historical events and identifies symbolic beings with historical persons or societies... The Historicist view follows a straight line of continuous fulfillment of prophecy, which starts in Daniel's time and goes through the Book of Revelation all the way to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

One of the most influential aspects of the early Protestant historicist paradigm was the assertion that scriptural identifiers of the Antichrist were matched only by the institution of the Papacy." End of Excerpt (Italics mine).

In other words, this was the dominant view held prior to the 1800s, until the Jesuits fabricated the doctrine of Futurism, which taught of a future antichrist, thus taking away the stigma of the papacy being the antichrist themselves. (all covered extensively prior).
